Retail Food Prices Rise Slightly in Second Quarter
WASHINGTON – Retail food prices at the supermarket increased in the second quarter of 2008, according to the latest American Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey. The informal survey shows the total cost of 16 basic grocery items in the second quarter of 2008 was $46.67, up about 3.5 percent or $1.64 from the first quarter of 2008.
Of the 16 items surveyed, 14 increased and two decreased in average price compared to the 2008 first-quarter survey. Compared to one year ago, the overall cost for the marketbasket items showed an increase of about 8.5 percent.

Lawsuits filed against ODA’s dairy labeling rule
Director Robert Boggs said he expected ODA's rule to be challenged.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is on the receiving end of two separate lawsuits from organizations claiming that its recently enacted dairy labeling rule violates constitutional rights.
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) both filed legal action Monday against the rule preventing false or misleading labels on dairy products.
Both organizations claim the Ohio rule interferes with First Right Amendments to communicate truthful information to Ohioans and interstate commerce.
